n l GIVING BACK

At your service

On Wednesday mornings, you’ll find Tonita Stephenson volunteering at the Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. Popular with staff and visitors alike, Stephenson combines a soft Southern accent with a jovial laugh and self-described “Clay Aiken haircut” (pre-latest makeover). Stephenson retired in 2003 as a Senate page supervisor for the General Assembly. Now 67, she is almost a 20-year survivor of breast cancer, and the experience prompted her to give back as a volunteer for Friends of the Cancer Center. She also is a Red Hat Society member and, with her husband, Keith, delivers Meals on Wheels through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program — which is “how I also connected to the Convention & Visitors Bureau,” she says, enthusiastically. The Stephensons live in Eastover and have three grown children and two grandchildren.
